Vaccinations

Ensuring your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date could save them from becoming seriously ill

It is not possible to stress too strongly the importance of ensuring your pet is routinely vaccinated. Over the years, we have unfortunately seen several cases of pets, whose illnesses could have been prevented if they were vaccinated regularly.

A vaccination is an injection that is given to puppies, kittens and young rabbits to protect them from specific infections and diseases. Vaccinations are very quick and almost pain-free, and an initial course usually consists of two injections, that are administered over a couple of weeks. This is done to help their bodies build up immunity to particular diseases.

However, just one vaccination will not give your pet lifelong immunity. To ensure your pets immunity is kept at a level that would prevent disease, regular vaccination top ups are required. Although, we will vary vaccinations required, as different diseases require different re-vaccination frequencies. This means, that your pet will require annual booster vaccinations to help keep them fit, strong and able to fight off infection and disease.

Below are the diseases and infections that your pet will receive vaccinations for:

Dogs

  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Canine Distemper Virus
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis
  • Leptospirosis
  • Canine Herpes Virus
  • Parainfluenzas
  • Kennel Cough

Cats

  • Cat Flu Viruses
  • Infectious Enteritis
  • Feline Leukaemia Virus

Rabbits

  • Myxamatosis
  • Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD)

As a rule, your pet will receive their first vaccination at around 6 weeks of age. However, this may differ depending on their species and breed; our team will be more than happy to advise you on your pet’s specific situation.

Microchipping

Microchipping your pet could help them be reunited with you if they should ever get lost

Did you know, that as of April 2016 it is a legal requirement for all dogs in Ireland to be microchipped? Although this is only applicable to dogs for now, this does not mean that microchipping other pets is any less important.

Having your pet microchipped is quick and largely painless. It is a simple procedure, involving the placement of an electronic chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the skin at the back of your pet’s neck. Once inserted, the chip is there for life and does not need to be replaced or updated.

Veterinary clinics, dog wardens and animal welfare organisations routinely ‘scan’ stray animals for microchips. If the animal is chipped, the chip number will appear on the scanner and the owner’s name and details can be retrieved in minutes. The owner can then be contacted and a safe return home for the animal can be arranged.

If you’re interested in finding out more about microchipping and the new laws, or to book an appointment with us, please call 091 867008 today and a member of our friendly team will be happy to help.

Neutering

Neutering is the safest way to prevent unwanted breeding as well as having many health and behavioural benefits for your pet too

Are you planning to breed from your pet? If not, having them spayed or neutered is one of the most responsible and safest decisions you could make. Whilst the main aim of spaying (for females) and castrating (for males) is to prevent unwanted breeding, there are also a range of health benefits such as prevention of testicular and ovarian cancer.

The neutering procedure can also help to calm some behavioural issues that you may be finding with your pet. Neutered males are generally less aggressive towards both other animals and humans, easier to train and also, not as likely to mark their territory through spraying. Females who are spayed, will not come into heat, which can often trigger some problematic behavioural and hormonal issues too.

Neutering is a relatively simple and straightforward operation, with your pet more than likely, able to return home to recover on the same day as their surgery. You can rest assured that your pet will be both safe and comfortable at all times while they are in our care; our experienced team carry out a number of in-depth checks prior to any kind of surgery, to ensure that your pet’s health is never compromised.

Another measure that has been taken with your pet’s wellbeing in mind here at Barna & Moycullen Vet Clinic, is to invest in the best possible equipment. Our state-of-the-art facilities allow our vets and nurses to complete their tasks to the highest possible standard, resulting in the best outcome for your pet.

Pet Passports

Pets can now travel freely within Europe if they have their own personal passport

Taking your pet abroad can often be a stressful time. However, thanks to the EU's ‘pet passport scheme’, pets can now travel between European countries much more easily.

However, these passports only work for EU member countries, so if you are planning on leaving Europe with your pet by your side, you will have to check the rules and regulations of that particular country prior to your visit.

For your pet to travel either in to or out of Ireland, they must have the following:

  • A registered microchip
  • An up to date rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before date of travel)
  • A passport – we apply for this on your behalf
  • Appropriate anti-parasite treatments at a correct and recorded time
  • Appropriate travel arrangements and accessories!

Failure to comply, may result in an extended stint in quarantine for your pet, either before or after your travel. Please make sure that you prepare in plenty of time so you don’t face delays or problems.

For any more information on pet passports and the rules and regulations surrounding them, please give us a call on 091 867008. Alternatively you can visit http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/.

Pet Insurance

Having a sick pet can be an extremely worrying time, but pet insurance can help to put your mind at ease

As veterinary medicine is an evolving science, we are always updating and improving diagnostic and treatment services. Thus, the possibilities for treating animals start to mirror what is done in human medicine – for example, it is not unusual for a dog to have cataract surgery or a cat to have a skin graft.

The down side to all of this fantastic new technology, is that it can often be quite expensive to use. Our goal is to provide your pet with the best possible veterinary care, and finances should not be something that gets in the way of this.

For this reason, we highly recommend that you take out pet insurance, particularly when your pet is young, as it can often be difficult to find a reasonable policy that covers older animals. Similar to human schemes, your pet insurance should cover situations when your animal is ill as they may need a specialist procedure or referral, which can sometimes be particularly expensive.

When you are looking for a policy for your pet, please shop around and remember, that if you find one particular result that is much cheaper than other quotes, there’s probably a reason for this. A major factor to look out for is lifelong cover – one that will cover an ongoing condition for the lifetime of the pet – as some policies will only cover a new condition for that policy year.

One final thing to consider in regards to pet insurance, is making sure that your policy covers all types of situations. Many insurers will offer an accident and emergency only policy, but bear in mind that this will not cover any ongoing illnesses that your pet may have, or develop in later life.
