Surgery

We provide all the necessary surgical treatments and hospitalisation required for complete healthcare. Surgery can be:

  • Elective - for example neutering, dental hygiene, lump removal
  • Necessary for treatment - for example removal of stones from bladder or a swallowed sock from the intestine!
  • Emergency - such as internal bleeding or a blocked bladder.

Prior to surgery your vet will discuss your pet's particular situation and surgery, including all advantages and foreseen risks. Remember to ask as many questions as possible so you can help in your pet's speedy recovery.

This is a broad topic that often evokes apprehension with most pet owners.

In anaesthesia we use human-grade anaesthetic agents which are inhaled, rather than injected, and we make anaesthesia as safe as possible in all our patients. Anaesthetic regimes are tailored to the individual pet to make sure that whatever their state of health the anaesthetic is as safe as possible for their situation.

We use heart and breathing monitors during all our surgeries and our nursing staff is constantly monitoring their progress during anaesthetic. Recovery after anaesthetic is usually quicker than expected by the owner.

After a full general anaesthetic and recovery, the pet will often walk out of the clinic like normal, much to their owner's delight.

If we have any specific concerns about the health of your pet prior to the anaesthetic, we will often advise a blood sample for a check of internal functioning of liver and kidneys, particularly in older animals. We may advise the use of a drip to help support them during anaesthetic if we think it is advisable.

If we have any specific concern about the health of your pet prior to the anaesthetic we will be pleased to discuss these with you or any concerns you may have about anaesthetics and your pet.

Hospitalisation

A dog being treated at Barna Veterinary ClinicShould your pet, at some stage, be in the position to be hospitalised, you can be assured that they are in the best of care. We know when we are sick ourselves, we need a lot more love, attention and encouragement as well as medical support such as drips, special medication and care. We aim to provide these to ensure your pet's quickest recovery. Our nursing staff are dedicated to monitoring and care of your pet during their stay with us.

We have separate dog and cat wards as well as an isolation area.

Opthalmology

Leanne (our vet) is studying to complete a Royal College of London awarded certificate in ophthalmology (eyes) and this is her particular area of interest.
