When is My Pet Dog a Senior?
Dogs reach a senior stage at different ages, depending on their size and breed:
- Small Breeds - over 8 years
- Medium Breeds - over 7 years
- Large Breeds - over 7 years
- Giant Breeds - over 5 years
Getting Older
As we and our pet get older, we start noticing that both our bodies and theirs change a bit. This can be normal but sometimes there can be more than the ageing process going on.
Ageing means that organs can start to show signs of wear and tear and like anything these problems are best faced early.
Things to Watch Out For in Your Older Pet!
Food
- Problems eating
- Loosing weight while eating properly
- Increased appetite
- Obesity
- Drinking more / excessively
- Incontinence
Activity
- Exercise intolerance
- Poor / reduced mobility
- Lethargy / sleeping more
- Eyesight / hearing problems
- Breathing problems
- Seizures or fits
Further Information on Looking After a Senior Pet
We would advise that older pets are examined twice annually to check their general health. A lot can happen in a year if you are approaching or over the 100 animal years old!
